CONFIRMED by the college itself, which is the institution that holds the records: Nancy (Slaughter) Lee was the first African American student to graduate from Juniata College, in 1932. She was a Huntingdon native and a graduate of Huntingdon High School, the daughter of Levi and Anna Bertha Slaughter, enrolled after finishing high school in 1928, and was part of the Day Students' Club all four years. Her senior portrait in the 1932 Alfarata is the first image of a Black student to appear in any Juniata yearbook. DROPPED, 'a time when many American colleges still turned Black students away': true in substance and unsourced as written. 'Many' is a scope word and needs a source of its own, and the post does not need it. The specific facts carry more weight than the generalisation. DROPPED, 'walked across the stage': nobody has sourced a description of the ceremony. It is a small invented image and this is not a post to invent images in. DROPPED, 'made history quietly, one commencement at a time': she graduated once. The phrase means nothing. ADDED, all sourced and all absent from the queued post: her parents' names, the 1928 high school graduation, four years in the Day Students' Club, and the 1932 Alfarata portrait. The yearbook detail is the strongest thing available and it was not in the post at all. If that holds it is one of the best local stories in this whole queue and deserves its own post, not a clause in someone else's. (b) 'After graduating from Juniata, Nancy (Slaughter) Lee '32 later moved to Philadelphia, where she passed away in 1957.' HEDGE WORTH KEEPING IN MIND: the television coverage of her story says 'little is known about her time at the college.' Do not let a future post fill that silence with invention.
